Senior British Open Championship
In 2004, Royal Portrush Golf Club last hosted the Senior British
Open Championship (also known as the 'British Seniors Open') from
22nd-25th July 2004. The Senior British Open Championship was previously
played at Royal Portrush in the five years between 1995 & 1999.
2004 Senior British Open Review
The 2004 Championship at Royal Portrush was won by Pete Oakley
who produced the biggest upset victory in the history of the Senior
British Open Championship presented by MasterCard when he triumphed
by one stroke. The little known American held off an elite entourage
of players that included American Tom Kite, Argentina’s Eduardo
Romero and Englishman Mark James to become the first qualifier to
take the coveted title in the 18-year history of the event.
History of the Senior British Open Championship
Since the inaugural Championship in 1987, the British Seniors Open
has become firmly established on the seniors world golfing calendar
with its popular blend of fierce competition, relaxed atmosphere
and camaraderie.
The Senior British Open Championship is now sanctioned by the
US PGA Tour and is not only an official event on both the Champions
Tour (US Seniors Tour) and European Seniors Tour, but it is also
recognised as one of the five seniors ‘Majors’ –
the others are the Senior PGA Championship, US Senior Open, Players
Championship and the Tradition.

The tournament was covered live by Sky Sports, ABC/TNT and The
Golf Channel.
